Tending, 2023

Tending is an installation of large and small patchworks at Cone Shape Top that Jes finished during their residency at Dream Farm Commons this winter. There, they explored the slow and intentional processes of natural dyeing and patchworking. A line of connection is drawn through the materials used in each patchwork to tell a material narrative about the artist's ancestors and origins. Including: photos on silk taken through time in the Bay Area and in China, recycled fabrics dyed with California clay and loquat leaves foraged from Oakland Chinatown. The patchworks are lined with pockets to hold objects associated with loss, love, and connection. Some pockets will be left empty for visitors to contribute objects of their own. The patchworks act as an altar inspired by curio shelves and invite viewers into a space of reflection.
